The overall reality of Social Media defies logic and reason that exists elsewhere. For example, the number of people following this effort seems to stagnant from time to time. At the same time the number of people responding to it continues to grow, almost exponentially. There is no explanation for this contradiction save one important fact: Social Media is not the reality you expected.
When I first established this effort I did so without expectation. The reason for that is simple: I was assured by “experts” that a blog would not generate traffic like, oh, Facebook or even Twitter. So I accepted the declared reality and went about the business of promoting my writing. In certain defiance of the opinion advanced by the “experts” my writing caught on, and the promoting of my writing produced results that more than just impressed.
But when I began to examine this success I came to the aforementioned contradiction: More responses than followers, and framed by traditional logic and reason I had to wonder how this was possible.
It is possible because people who read this blog don’t necessarily follow it. It turns out that people who read blogs are not necessarily the same people who run from one Facebook page to another, frantically clicking the “Like” button. People who read blogs and respond to them tend to be quiet and unassuming, not given open expressions of emotion. Instead they send private communications thanking and praising the content published.
I accept this as explanation and reality, and embrace it. Better a rebel sublime with discerning taste that an over-the-top drama queen who defines their existence by the number of “Likes” they generate.
To all those who read and respond to this effort: Thank you. Welcome. Hope to hear from you soon.
